Researchers at the Harvard Medical School studied over 1,300 adult patients who were admitted to hospital after taking prescription heartburn and acid reflux medication. Researchers found that patients who took the medication for 14 days were significantly more likely to have heartburn.
The medication, known generically as esomeprazole, works by neutralizing the stomach acid that acid backs up into the esophagus, which reduces the acidity in the stomach.
“This is a very safe and effective treatment for heartburn and acid reflux,” says Dr. Sidney Wolfe, a professor of gastroenterology at Harvard. “Patients do not need to take medication if they have any underlying health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure.”
Crestor, marketed as Nexium in the United States, is a prescription drug that treats heartburn and acid reflux. It is available in various strengths, including 20mg, 40mg, and 60mg. Like other heartburn and acid reflux medications, Crestor also helps reduce stomach acid by reducing how much stomach acid is acid-producing.
Patients who take the drug for 14 days to treat heartburn and acid reflux should be monitored regularly for signs of worsening acidity and persistent symptoms. These include severe, watery, burning, and acid-stopping stomach cramps.
Crestor has also been associated with more serious side effects, including kidney problems, liver failure, and death. Some of these side effects may require immediate medical attention.
Dr. Nita R. Biederman, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, says the risk of Crestor-associated complications is low compared to other heartburn medications. “It’s relatively low, but it’s still possible,” she says.
Biederman says her patients had to take medication for 14 days, but it took about two weeks for the medication to be fully effective. She also says Crestor can help to reduce the amount of stomach acid that can be acid-stressed by taking it at the same time each day.
“Patients should take their medication the same way every day, and they should continue to take it the same way throughout the 14-day treatment,” she says.
It’s important to note that Crestor does not cure heartburn or acid reflux. “Crestor does not treat heartburn. It works by neutralizing acid from the stomach,” says Dr. Nita Biederman, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Rising heartburn and acid reflux is a growing problem in the United States, including in many other countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and other European countries. In the past few years, Crestor has been linked to more than 3 million cases of heartburn and acid reflux.
The FDA says the risk of Crestor-associated complications is low compared to other heartburn and acid reflux medications. “The most common adverse effects of Crestor include headache, stomach pain, back pain, muscle aches, and flushing of the face.”
The most common side effects of Crestor include headache, stomach pain, back pain, muscle aches, and flushing of the face. “It’s important to note that these side effects are usually mild and temporary, and rarely serious,” says Dr.
The FDA says the most common side effects of Crestor include headache, heartburn, back pain, muscle aches, and flushing of the face. Other serious side effects include liver damage, serious allergic reactions, and stomach bleeding.
Rising heartburn and acid reflux are serious side effects that Crestor can be fatal. When patients stop taking Crestor, the risk of heartburn or acid reflux is increased.
“If you have heartburn or acid reflux that’s severe or watery, you might want to try taking Crestor,” Dr. Biederman says.
