The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning that generic versions of prescription medicines like Nexium and Prilosec are not being shown to be safe or effective against heartburn or acid reflux. These products contain a chemical called histamine H2 receptor antagonist which is a type of histamine antagonist. The drug may cause stomach pain and should be used with caution in patients with stomach ulcers and acid reflux. The warning applies to Nexium and Prilosec. These products are manufactured in India. The warning does not apply to any generic versions of prescription medicines sold in the United States. A warning that is not included in the list of prescription medicines is also found on the manufacturer’s website. The drug is not available as a generic drug. FDA says that these products are dangerous and should be avoided by patients, doctors and consumers. The agency said that the drug’s safety profile has not been established and that it is not currently known whether the drug has any effect on the heart. The FDA said that the product is not marketed to consumers because the product is not available as a generic drug. FDA issued a warning to AstraZeneca last month that it had been found to have caused serious adverse reactions in patients taking prescription medicines for heartburn and acid reflux. The agency said that there have been no reports of adverse reactions to the products or other adverse reactions to the product in the past. AstraZeneca said the warning does not apply to other drugs or to a broader group of drugs. The warning applies to all prescription medicines used in the treatment of heartburn and acid reflux. The warning does not apply to any generic drugs. The warning is based on a review of data from the FDA website which indicates that the FDA found that many prescription medicines contain histamine H2 receptor antagonist, and that many of these products have serious adverse effects. A study from the University of California San Francisco found that a drug containing Nexium, the generic name for Prilosec, was more effective than a placebo in reducing heartburn and other symptoms associated with the condition.
The study, led by researchers at the University of California San Francisco, was published in the April 20 issue of the, with findings expected to be published in, Monday.
The study compared Nexium to a placebo in 14,300 patients who had a history of heartburn and had symptoms such as frequent heartburn, a painful swallowing sensation, frequent heartburn and other symptoms, including difficulty swallowing.
The study included a group of 14,300 patients, each with a diagnosis of heartburn, at the University of California San Francisco. Patients were assigned to one of two groups, according to the study's lead author, Dr. John A. Lue, professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco, who presented the results at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American Heart Association.
Among the 14,300 patients in the study, 22,500 patients were taking a placebo and 11,500 patients were taking Nexium. All but one patient took a placebo, and none of them took a drug that contained the ingredient. None of them took the Nexium drug.
The researchers also found that patients who took the placebo had fewer heartburn symptoms as compared with patients who took the drug.
The researchers said the findings were "an important finding in the ongoing battle against heartburn and other related ailments," which are caused by an imbalance of acid-related hormones in the body.
The study "is the first to examine the efficacy of Nexium in treating heartburn and related conditions with a placebo," Dr. Lue, associate director of the University of California San Francisco's Department of Surgery, told ABC News.
A similar study, in the journal, found that Nexium was more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms associated with heartburn and related conditions, such as chronic heartburn and the signs and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The drug, known generically as omeprazole, is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and peptic ulcers.
The study was led by researchers at the University of California San Francisco, who reported that "the findings support an overall trend of encouraging the use of omeprazole in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)," he said. "This finding is important because it suggests that omeprazole, which is also available in the United States as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug, may be an effective treatment for patients with GERD."
The study is the first published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. It was reported in the April 20 issue of the journal.
"This study provides important evidence that omeprazole is a more effective treatment for patients with GERD than other PPIs for the same condition," Dr. Lue, the lead author, said. "These findings are very encouraging, and we hope that this study will become a major international study in the field of PPIs for patients with GERD."
Lue noted that the study had several key limitations. He added that "the overall strength of this study is that it has a very good number of participants, which is consistent with previous research."
In addition to the findings published in the journal, Lue said he would like to see more research on the effectiveness of omeprazole for patients with GERD, as well as the possible role of other PPIs for the treatment of IBS.
He also said there is a "need for further research" on the use of omeprazole for IBS, as well as the long-term effects on quality of life for patients with IBS.
